The Future of Auto Enrolment

Written by Karen Bennett, BrightPay: This year sees the largest number of employers going through the automatic enrolment process.  Over 750,000 small and micro employers will reach their staging date where they must enrol their eligible jobholders into a workplace pension scheme.  Although auto enrolment is being rolled out since 2012, there are many new changes this year that employers and bureaus need to be aware of.

  • From October, all new employers will begin to go through the auto enrolment process. Unlike the staging date roll-out with existing employers, new employers will need to comply with auto enrolment as soon as the first employee begins their employment.
  • Many of the larger employers are also meeting their re-enrolment date, where they must go through the enrolment process again. Some duties remain the same, such as the re-declaration of compliance, but some duties are different, for example not all employees need to be assessed at re-enrolment. • The minimum contributions rates for automatic enrolment are also set to increase within the next year. This has been described as phasing, with an increase planned for April 2018 and a second increase for April 2019.

With so many changes taking place this year, it is important to understand what’s involved  so that you can assist your clients. Worryingly, according to The Pensions Regulator, 49% of accountants asked did not know that new employers will have immediate auto enrolment duties. Make sure you are prepared to offer your clients a knowledgeable service.

This October, BrightPay are joining up with Pension Playpen to deliver a free auto enrolment webinar for accountants, bookkeepers and payroll bureaus.
