Cameron John is Sage’s Global Director of Accountant Partners.  A qualified accountant, he is passionate about enabling accountants’ client relationships to flourish. He’ll be at Accountex Summit North, sharing practical advice on how to advise clients on the best way to embrace digital solutions in the second wave of cloud adoption.

How did you get in to the profession?

Sitting in a classroom at High School – Accounting was the first subject I really got!  I still work on the mantra of Debits on the door side, Credits on the window side – it still works today!  Anyway I progressed from University into the profession and then into consulting, which is where my passion for technology as an ‘enabler’ was grasped.  I’ve now spent the best part of 10 years, post my days in practice, working with Companies, Accountants and Bookkeepers to help them make the most of technology.

What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?

Working for a company with Accountant partners across 23 countries, it’s hard to keep on top of talking to the right people in the right time zones!

And the most rewarding?

Meeting with Accountants and hearing how they support, advise and grow their clients businesses is always so rewarding.  It makes me remember how import this profession is to the success of the economy in each country.

Who or what inspires you to be even better?

My three children inspire me. Firstly, to get my work done faster so I can spend more time with them (or break up an argument!). Secondly, that tomorrow is going to be better than today and I want to help to shape that tomorrow for them.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

“When you follow Pavarotti on stage – Don’t sing! – Be yourself” a great piece of advice I received when training as a singer, which applies to every area of life.

What is the one thing accountants must do to adapt and remain successful?

Never stop learning and give yourself every opportunity to be open to new ideas and new ways of working. There is not one silver bullet or a one size fits all model so each Accountant and Bookkeeper needs to assess what is right to give them their competitive advantage and remain successful.
