A limited number of tickets are remaining for Manchester’s free one-day accounting conference

Tickets are going fast for Accountex Summit North – a free-to-attend accounting conference taking place on 10 September 2019 at Manchester Central.

Following its blisteringly successful launch last year, the one-day event is back for 2019. The cream of northern business – including more than 1,300 accountants, finance and business professionals – are expected to attend.

Accountancy practices

Hundreds of accountancy practices and finance professionals located across the Midlands and the north of England have already registered for the conference, where they will have the opportunity to network with other senior industry professionals, immerse themselves in accounting expertise via the expert-led conference programme, and meet and do business with more than 80 leading suppliers.

The stellar exhibitor line-up for this year’s event has already been revealed, and it boasts some of the biggest and newest names in accounting and finance innovation. It's not just the central exhibition that’s proving a draw – the big names will be filling out the theatres too. The conference’s education programme is packed with over 20 seminars across three theatres, and includes sessions delivered by high profile thought-leaders covering topics from MTD to cyber-security and much more, plus a special guest Keynote in the main 800-seat auditorium. The full timetable is due to be announced later this month.

Organiser Diversified Communications UK, which also runs the flagship Accountex event in London, says the summit is already on course for another record edition.

Glowing reception

“We received a glowing reception to the launch event last year, which attracted more than 1,000 attendees. We’re already well on track to surpass that success, with an even longer list of big names already lined up to exhibit and speak at the 2019 event,” says event director Zoe Lacey-Cooper.

“We’re incredibly proud to be bringing Accountex Summit North back to the northern powerhouse this year, and of the overwhelming industry support that the show continues to garner – from our visitors, speakers and exhibitors – as well as the backing from our important key associations, partners and organisations.”

As in its previous year, Accountex Summit North enjoys the support of a number of major industry associations, training bodies and charities, including ACCA – Association of Chartered Certified Accountants; AIA – The Association of International Accountants; BASDA – Business Application Software Developers Association; CIMA – Chartered Institute of Management Accountants; CPD Standards Office; ICAEW – Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales; ICB – The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers; ICPA – Institute of Certified Practice Accountants; and IFA – Institute of Financial Accountants.

Other organisations supporting the show include 2020 Innovation and MyFirmsApp, as well as media partners AccountancyAge, Economia, Elite Business, Mediaplanet, and XU Magazine.

Ms Lacey-Cooper concludes: “With limited places available and tickets already almost gone, accounting and finance professionals should register today to ensure they don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to hear from top industry speakers, discover new products and services, and network with their peers.”

Accountex Summit North is free to attend for accounting and finance professionals only. Places are limited, and all registrations will be verified and confirmed. For further information, and to apply for a delegate ticket, please visit www.accountex.co.uk/summitnorth.

How farmers are ploughing ahead with MTD

Britain's farmers lead the way on MTD and, somewhat bizarrely, the financial sector is lagging behind.

And according to the HMRC: "Businesses in the agriculture sector are one of the fastest groups to sign up to MTD. 50 per cent already registered.

"The financial sector is one of the slowest to register with nearly 75 per cent yet to sign up."

HMRC urges businesses with a turnover above £85,000 to sign up to MTD before the 7 August VAT filing date.

Farmers lead way on MTD

MTD became law for VAT periods starting on or after 1 April. Many of the 1.2 million businesses affected need to submit their first quarterly return using software by 7 August.

And if paying by direct debit, these businesses must register by Monday 29 July.

  • Around 10,000 businesses are registering for MTD every day
  • And more than 600,000 have signed up in total with some 400,000 submissions already successfully made using software

The benefits of MTD

Theresa Middleton, director of MTD at HMRC, says: “Now is the time for businesses with an August quarterly filing deadline to sign up. And join the hundreds of thousands already experiencing the benefits of MTD.

“During this first year we won’t be issuing filing or record keeping penalties to businesses doing their best to comply.”

HMRC expects MTD to reduce tax lost due to errors, thanks to the improved accuracy that digital records provide and the fact that information is sent directly from software to HMRC.

But the latest tax gap figures showed mistakes cost taxpayers £9.9 billion last year – £3 billion attributable to VAT alone.

Accountants' advisory survey: what they really think

A short while back, Accounting Insight News teamed up with Paul Shrimpling of Remarkable Practice plus Intuit QuickBooks to carry out a survey of accountants.

In a nutshell we wanted to know what the profession thinks about the "advisory role".

We had a great response. And the results are contained in an excellent report by Paul and his team.

Take part in the survey

The full report is available FREE to accounting professionals who take part in the survey.

So, if you haven't tried the survey but would like to, check it our go here... and you'll be directed to report.

For now here's a flavour of what's what...

Paul says: "Advisory work is the much-talked-about future of the accountancy profession.

"But how well prepared are you and your team to make the most of this so-called advisory opportunity?

Decision making conversations

"And yet more than half of accountants are (mostly) failing to have future-focused, decision-making conversations with their business-owner clients.

"On a positive note 46 per cent of accountants say that either every client meeting or almost every client meeting involves a future-focused conversation.

This means, however, that 54 per cent are mostly not having future-focused conversations with clients."

Findings and insights...

  • 55 per cent of accountants believe that more than half of their clients are ambitious and want to grow sales and profits.
  • 22 per cent of accountants believe that more than half of their clients will pay for quarterly advice on growth.
  • 52 per cent of accountants say that most or all partners/directors/managers are actively learning about non-accounting business issues.
  • 60 per cent of accountants say that most or all partners/directors/managers are capable of holding a goals conversation with business owners.
  • 58 per cent of accountants say that a shortage of time affects all their client facing team some or all of the time.
  • 82 per cent of accountants say they have yet to rid themselves of the work overload in December/January.

The full report is excellent. So why not do the survey and check it out!!
